Voting

Here you can learn how voting works in municipal elections in Tomelilla Municipality and in elections to the European Parliament. If you are unable to go to a polling station, a mobile voting officer can assist you.

Voting in Municipal Elections

Municipal council elections are held every four years. The next election will take place in 2026.

You are entitled to vote in the municipal council election if you are:

  • At least 18 years old on election day, and
  • A Swedish citizen registered as a resident in the municipality, or
  • A citizen of an EU Member State, Iceland, or Norway and registered as a resident in the municipality, or
  • A citizen of a country other than those listed above, or stateless, and have been registered as a resident in Sweden for three consecutive years prior to election day, and are registered as a resident in the municipality.

Polling Card (Municipal Elections)

If you are eligible to vote, a polling card will be sent to your home. The polling card shows which electoral district you belong to, the address of your polling station, and its opening hours.

If you have a Swedish digital mailbox and have opted in to receive digital mail from public authorities, you will also receive your polling card digitally.

Voting in European Parliament Elections

Elections to the European Parliament are held every five years. The next election will take place in 2029.

To vote in the European Parliament election, you must:

  • Be at least 18 years old on election day, and
  • Be a Swedish citizen who is or has been registered as a resident in Sweden, or
  • Be a citizen of another EU Member State, registered as a resident in Sweden, and enrolled in the Swedish electoral register no later than 30 days before election day.

Polling Card (European Parliament Elections)

Everyone who is eligible to vote in the European Parliament election in Sweden and listed in the electoral register will receive a polling card by post. The polling card shows which electoral district you belong to, the address of your polling station, and its opening hours.

Different Ways to Vote

Vote at a Polling Station on Election Day

Election day is 13 September 2026.

Your polling card shows which electoral district you belong to, the address of your polling station, and its opening hours. Polling stations are generally open from 08.00 to 20.00 (8 a.m. to 8 p.m.).

You must bring valid ID to vote.

All polling stations are accessible and equipped with lifts and ramps for wheelchairs and walkers.

Advance Voting

You can vote in advance at a designated voting location. Advance voting takes place several weeks before election day, and you may vote at any advance voting location in Sweden.

Information about locations and opening hours for advance voting will be provided ahead of the election.

You must bring valid ID to vote.

Mobile Voting Officers

If you are unable to visit a polling station due to illness, age, or disability, and do not have anyone who can vote on your behalf, the municipality can arrange for a mobile voting officer.

Mobile voting means that an election official visits you at home or at another agreed location to collect your vote. Your vote is prepared in the same way as an advance vote at a voting location.

To book a mobile voting officer, contact the election office of Tomelilla Municipality:

Voting from Outside Sweden

If you are abroad during the election, you can vote from outside Sweden. You may either vote by post or vote in advance at a Swedish embassy or consulate.

If you are listed in the electoral register, you will receive a polling card by post together with the materials needed for postal voting.
