Artist-in-residence 2027

International artist Aljoscha has been awarded the 2027 Sten Malmquist Grant and will serve as the next artist-in-residence in Tomelilla.

Aljoscha is the founder of bioism—or biofuturism—an artistic practice that speculates on new life forms rather than describing existing nature. He views each work as an unknown living being. In Tomelilla, he will develop "Spacetime, a Single Being", a site-specific project exploring space-time as a living continuum.

Through a suspended installation, public interactions, and daily drawings, he will create "biofacts": synthetic organisms composed of form, color, and care. The project asks how art can advance bioethics, how deviation can become genesis, and how future life might be shaped without suffering.

Born in Ukraine, active internationally

Aljoscha is an internationally active artist born in Kharkiv, Ukraine. He has been based in Düsseldorf, Germany, since 2001, though he is currently living in Italy. He has an established international career and experience working in a wide variety of locations.

His delicate and seductively beautiful site-specific sculptures—or "life forms," ​​as he calls them—have inhabited diverse environments. He has received numerous awards and honors and possesses extensive experience with artist-in-residence programs and art education projects.

The Tomelilla Culture and Leisure Committee decided to award the 2027 Sten Malmquist Grant to Aljoscha. He will be working in Tomelilla during May and June of 2027.
